Metals are subject to corrosion when exposed to weather conditions or aggressive environments. In the case of fasteners, this can lead to joint deterioration and various negative effects depending on where the fasteners are used. To prevent corrosion damage, various methods of protection against rust are used. This can be by making the fastener stainless steel or by applying an anti-corrosion coating. The most common method of protection is galvanisation.
TYPES OF CORROSION PROTECTION FOR FASTENERS AND THEIR INTENDED USE
Let’s take a look at the corrosion protection types and application areas of the fasteners:
Stainless steel with high corrosion resistance. Highly corrosion-resistant stainless steel fasteners are used in highly corrosive environments, both outdoors and indoors. They are used where they come into contact with various chemicals and acids. They are reliable for use in products in constant contact with seawater or chlorinated swimming pool water.
Acid resistant steel. Suitable for fittings exposed to environmental influences, for example in damp rooms or for the aggressive substances used in industrial plants. Not suitable for products in contact with sea water.
Stainless steel with normal corrosion resistance. Suitable for indoor and outdoor applications in non-corrosive environments.
Hot-dip galvanised steel. This type of steel is used indoors in damp areas and outdoors in normal atmospheric exposure.
Electrically galvanized steel. These products can only be used inside dry rooms. Outdoors, they can be used for temporary fixings.
Zinc-based coatings are the most common. This method combines good protective properties with the affordable price of the finished products.
